Summary Eight hundred and twenty one serum samples were collected randomly from nonvaccinated layers flocks against avian encephalomyelitis disease in Khartoum State (Khartoum, Khartoum North, and Omdurman Towns). Ages of flocks varied from 40 days up to 2.5years. Serum samples were examined using indirect ELISA to detect specific antibodies against Avian Encephalomyelitis virus. The over-all sero-prevalence of AE antibodies was 57.1%. The number of sero-positive flocks varied in the studied localities with more sero-positives in farms located in Geraif Locality (Khartoum Town), Wad Albakheit Locality (Omdurman Town), and Elalafoon Locality (Khartoum North Town). The number of positive sera per flock correlated with flock size. The examined layer flocks had no clinical signs, or noticeable decrease in egg production. The detection of avian encephalomyelitis antibodies indicates that these flocks were exposed to a field strain of avian encephalomyelitis virus.
