In a preliminary study, blood serum samples were collected from 488 adult apparently healthy farm animals and birds (111 cattle, 203 sheep, 111 goats and 63 chickens) in Marawi area, the Northern State, during July to August, 2008. The sera were screened for Helicobacter pylori antibodies using an immunochromatographic rapid test. The prevalence of H. pylori antibodies in test animals and chicken amounted to 70.3% (78/111), 68% (138/203), 96.4% (107/111) and 88.9% (56/63) in cattle, sheep, goats and chickens, respectively. The present study showed that the seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in farm animals and birds in the study area is high. Therefore, further investigations on the isolation, identification and characterization of Helicobacter pylori from farm animals and man are important.
