Summary
An outbreak of a severe disease was reported in sheep and goats flocks in Tabat area, Gezira State, Central Sudan. A mortality rate of 24% (17/75) and 4.5% (9/200) in goats and sheep were reported respectively. There was a sudden death, however, occasionally affected animals showed dullness, anoroxia and lethargy.
In sheep, accumulation of large amount of blood-tinged fluid was noticed in the abdomen. In both sheep and goats, the liver was pale, enlarged (three times its normal size), and had rounded edges. Its capsule was thick, rough and covered with soft fibrin strands.
The liver surface showed grayish areas of necrosis. Histologically, livers of both sheep and goats displayed different degrees of degenerative changes and scars. The most striking findings included vascular thrombosis and large areas of coagulative necrosis. Streptococcus salivarius was isolated from livers.
